Nvidia Forms Strategic Alliance with Former OpenAI Executive’s AI Startup

Graphics chip giant Nvidia has announced a substantial financial commitment to Thinking Machines Lab, the artificial intelligence venture established by former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati. The multi-year strategic alliance was revealed on Tuesday, marking another significant move by Nvidia into the AI startup ecosystem.

Murati launched Thinking Machines Lab following her departure from OpenAI, where she previously held the position of interim chief executive during Sam Altman’s temporary removal in 2023. The startup focuses on developing AI systems that are more accessible, customizable, and broadly capable, though specific details about its technological approach remain limited.

The partnership extends beyond financial backing, with Thinking Machines Lab committing to utilize at least one gigawatt of Nvidia’s cutting-edge Vera Rubin systems. These represent the semiconductor company’s most sophisticated hardware offerings, scheduled for delivery in the latter half of this year.

Nvidia’s involvement in AI startups has become increasingly prominent as the company benefits from the artificial intelligence revolution. The firm’s graphics processing units serve as the backbone for training AI models and managing intensive computational workloads, positioning it as a critical supplier to major AI companies including OpenAI and Anthropic.

Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s chief executive, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting the exceptional talent assembled at Thinking Machines Lab and their ambitious goals for advancing AI technology. However, both organizations have chosen not to disclose the precise financial terms of Nvidia’s investment.

In October, Thinking Machines Lab unveiled its inaugural product called Tinker, which functions as an application programming interface designed to help researchers and developers customize AI models. The startup had previously secured $2 billion in funding from various investors in July, demonstrating significant market confidence in Murati’s vision.

Murati’s recognition as a notable figure in the technology sector was further acknowledged through her inclusion on a prestigious annual changemakers list, reflecting her influence in shaping the AI landscape.
